Put These Bug-Repelling Mason Jars Outside and You Might Not See a Mosquito All Summer Long

We are all excited for the summer days. Long walks on the beach, swimming in the ocean, long hot nights, spending time with family on the porch. Although there are many great things to do, along with the summer come the annoying insects and mosquitoes. When they are constantly around us, we can’t really enjoy outdoor activities. Also, they can be dangerous for spreading different types of diseases, so there’s one more reason to ward them off.

Although there is a  huge choice for bug sprays that are effective at keeping mosquitoes away, most of them contain a very harmful chemical DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide).

DEET has been shown to cause a variety of health issues, from mild side effects such as allergic reactions and skin irritation and more serious long-term effects, such as nervous system interference.

Luckily, there is another option that is effective and has no side effects at the same time. You can prepare your own insect repellent with essential oils like these:

Lemon eucalyptus essential oil : It is extracted from the leaves of the lemon eucalyptus tree and it has  proved to be highly effective at repelling mosquitoes.

Citronella essential oil, extracted from lemon grass, also has a strong scent that wards off mosquitoes and other flying insects.

According to a published study , substances produced by the peel of common citrus fruits such as limes, lemons and oranges, grapefruits and  tangerines are all effective at repelling mosquitoes.

Mosquito Repellent Mason Jars

An effective, and aesthetically pleasing, method of using essential oils and citrus fruits as mosquito repellent is through the use of mason jars.  Here is everything that you’ll need to make your own mason jar bug repellents:

  • 2 mason jars
  • 10 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil
  • 10 drops of citronella essential oil
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 lime, sliced
  • 4 sprigs of rosemary (optional)
  • Floating disc candles

  • Add an even amount of slices of lemon and lime to each jar
  • Put 2 sprigs or rosemary into each jar (optional)
  • Fill the jar about 3/4 full with water
  • Add essential oils, 10 of each type to a specific jar (don’t mix them together
  • Add more water (if necessary) until the jar is almo

If you want to activate the natural mosquito repellents , just light a candle. These mason jars are an excellent decoration for porches, gardens, campfires, backyards or any other outdoor places where people (and mosquitoes) like to spend time.
